- WHAT IS "THE MIAMI FILM ASSOCIATION" AKA M.A.F.I.A.?

The Miami Association of Filmmakers and Independent Actors (MAFIA) is a Miami University student organization that exists to support Miami students from all backgrounds and majors interested in Independent Film production, management and enjoyment, whether it's just a hobby or a planned career. MAFIA helps its members do just what they enjoy... make films. MAFIA owns it's own equipment from cameras to editing suites. We sponsor film production, film screenings, parties, and starting this year, our own INTERNATIONAL film festival. MAFIA serves as a production source to its members, helping you get your movie made, or get you involved in other films shooting locally, whether to learn the trade or simply just have fun.

- OUR GOAL...

MAFIA's goal is simple: to bring people of all backgrounds a knowledge-bases together to produce some great films. As you may or may not know, a successful film requires not only a good director, and cool artistic shots, but management/business people(producers), accountants, technical people (camera operators/sound technicians), art designers, set designers, costume designers, writers, food/catering, composers, actors, builders, painters and movers -- all of which we have on our own campus. Our continuing goal is provide the means to bring all these people together, to perfect their trades and make some awesome films (while having some fun in the process).

- WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU...

MAFIA can get you in-contact with other people on campus interested in film, making, enjoying or just watching. You don't need to make films to just hang-out and have fun with people who love movies just as much as you do. We work with other student orgs. to sponsor meetings, film screenings, parties and film productions. We provide up-to-date info. on our website of film-related goings-on, and last, but certainly not least, we provide students the means to make their own films.

- HOW IT WORKS...

MAFIA members meet at one or two main meetings a semester, called "General Assemblies" in which films and events are announced (and more suggested), films people want to make are pitched by members to members (so interested members can make the film happen) and some recently produced clips of films can be shown so everyone can see what's in-the-works. This also is a time to give new-comers a chance to become members. MAFIA officers will be on-hand to answer questions and show-off equipment. Anyone can make their own film, and practice makes perfect. This Organization costs you nothing, that's $0.00, no fees, NO dues. Membership is free, the use of our equipment is free, all meetings and events are free.

GENERAL INFO ON FILMMAKING with MAFIA-- because expensive equipment is used, only members are allowed to borrow it, and only after they have been shown how to use it correctly. However, membership is free and open to ANY Miami student or alumni, our quick low-down on equipment is fast and free, and anyone (member or not) can work on any film with at least one trained member present. One final note: Before you plan your film, remember that you'll have to schedule your shoot around (among other things) the availability of the equipment. We have a lot of members, all making films with the same equipment, you must schedule in advance to guarantee equipment availability.

- EVENTS

Any member can sponsor an event/screening/mafia gathering, simply contact our Events Coordinator to get your event approved and listed. If you need a meeting location reserved on-campus, or any special equipment needs (i.e. projector, dvd player, tables, harpoon, ect) be sure to let us know.

e The Oxford International Film Festival (OIFF) serves as an artistic center in the region to give filmmakers (both local, national, and international) a place to showcase their works to a culturally diverse and historically rich region of Ohio that has been well-overlooked by the film and media industries. This large, local festival will give the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Oxford area communities a chance to experience first-hand films from around the globe. The festival was created to encourage cinematic arts, production and awareness in the area and serve to encourage and foster further growth to local, national and international filmmakers in their trade.   About the Event An opening night Premiere Gala kicks-off each year's festival. Accepted films are screened over the following 4-days, amidst film-related vendors, parties, a 24 hour film competition, meet and greet sessions and workshops. A catered, public awards-ceremony will be held the final day of the event concluding the festivities.   Awards Awards will be chosen in two main categories, Jury Awards and Audience awards. Jury Awards are choosen from the selected films by a select panel of local filmmakers. Audience-Choice awards are given in each category based on polls taken from audiences at each screening. All prizes and winners will be announced at a public awards ceremony held the final day of the festival, followed by a meet and greet time with the winners. This ceremony will serve as the closing event for the festival. For a full list of awards to be presented at the 2007 Oxford International Film Festival CLICK HERE.   Festival History

OIFF was created as a joint venture between Star Com Productions (an independent production house) and the Miami Film Association (of Miami University) in August of 2006 in order to help promote the art, production, and exhibition of independent film in the region. All proceeds from the festival to go benefit the Miami University cinematic and community arts programs.
